What is Reiki?

Reiki is a Japanese word meaning universal life energy. “Rei” is the higher intelligence that guides creation and functioning of the universe. It is a subtle wisdom and means spirit, divine, or soul. “Ki” is non-physical life force energy that flows through all things.

Reiki is a field of pure intelligence that is all knowing and is harmonious with every belief system. It integrates into wholeness the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual levels. This method of healing taps into the energy referred to by philosophers and martial artists as “Ki” in Japan, “Chi” in China, and “Prana” in India.

Reiki has been traced back thousands of years. Evidence of this form of healing have been found in Tibet, China, India, Egypt, Japan, and the Greek and Roman cultures. The teaching was passed underground for centuries through word of mouth, but was rediscovered in the 1800’s by Dr. Mikao Usui in Japan.

We each have the ability to heal ourselves on every level. Reiki gives us the opportunity to return to a harmonious balance. In ancient times, it was the practice of laying-on-of-hands, and remains so even today. The practitioner is merely a vehicle through which the energy flows.

Reiki and Health Care

Reiki treatment is rapidly growing in hospitals all over the world. It complements medical treatments, natural therapies, and massage therapy. Medical research has focused upon Reiki’s effects rather than explaining how it works. The results are impressive showing highly significant reduction in pain and improvement in immune and nervous system functioning. According to Prevention Magazine (Oct 2004) “about 60% of the hospitals included in the US News and World Report ‘America’s Best Hospitals List’, offer some kind of Reiki program.”

The Principles of Reiki

1. Just for today, do not worry.
2. Just for today, do not get angry.
3. Honor your parents, teachers, and elders.
4. Earn your living honestly.
5. Show gratitude to everything.
